What’s in the new edition of the Maquila Solidarity Update

Violence, economic crisis and women workers’ rights in Juarez: The never-ending wave of violence in Ciudad Juarez has turned this Mexican border city into a virtual war zone. The trajedy has particularly affected women, with approximately 1,400 femicides occurring since 1993. Many of these women worked in the city’s maquilas.

Global action in solidarity with Mexican workers: Between February 14 and 19 rallies were held in Canada, the US, Mexico and around the world to mark the Global Days of Action in support of Mexico’s independent labour movement.

Mexico: An industry’s decline leaves Tehuacan workers in a precarious situation: In the last decade over 30,000 jobs have been lost in the garment industry in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico, making working conditions there more precarious for workers and their families.
